I. Pre-admission:

Q: Does NPU accept International students? If so, how should I apply?

A: Yes. NPU is authorized under Federal law to enroll nonimmigrant alien students. To apply for admission, an international applicant is required to submit the following documents:

  1. An Application Form (online or hardcopy). Online application can be made at https://secure.npu.edu/apply/
  2. Official transcripts from previously attended colleges and/or high school (for freshmen only) and a photocopy of degree certification document if any degrees earned. If the degree certification document or the diploma was not issued in English, a certified translation in English is required.
  3. A nonrefundable application fee of $60. There is $20 additional charge for Express evaluation, and $30 for Express Mail Service. You may either pay it online using credit card when you submit the application online or send us a bank draft together with your application documents. Please make your bank draft payable to "NPU".
  4. Financial support documents (your bank letter indicating a minimum amount of $24,000 available), if you will be sponsored by others, please submit the bank letter of your financial sponsor and the Guarantor Letter signed by your financial sponsor (the form can be downloaded at: http://www.npu.edu/archives/forms/Guarantor_Letter.pdf)
Please have the documents mailed to:

NPU Admissions Office

The NPU Admissions Committee provides individualized admission evaluation service. During the evaluation process for an applicant, e-mail messages will be sent to the applicant to update him/her of the progress. At the end, a copy of the evaluation report will be provided to the accepted applicant. Normally the applicant may expect to receive a notification of admission status in two weeks after filing the complete application materials with the NPU Admissions Office.

The applicants may check the most up-to-date admissions information at NPU's Admissions website: http://www.npu.edu/admissions/

Q: I have not taken TOEFL test yet; do I need to take ESL classes at NPU?  If yes, how many ELS classes should I take?

A: English proficiency affects the student's learning efficiency. Therefore it is necessary for the student to maintain a certain level of English proficiency.

For those students who have not taken TOEFL or whose TOEFL scores do not meet our minimum requirement (PBT: 550, CBT: 213: IBT: 79), they will be required to take an English Placement Exam (EPE) in listening, reading, writing and speaking. The EPE results are used for placement of the students in English classes at various levels.

We have three levels of ESL classes (English as A Second Language): High Beginner (ESL200 Level), Intermediate (ESL300 Level), and Advanced (ESL400 Level).

Q: What is the estimated cost for studying at NPU?

A: Here is the estimated cost for one trimester (as semester) based on the average student expenditures.

	Tuition: $3300 - $4120 per trimester
(based on the minimum course load required for international students)
	Fee: $70 per trimester
	Textbooks: $240 - $450 per trimester
Insurance: About $300 (the current annual cost is about $900, subject to change)
	Housing: $400 - $500 per month
	Food & misc.: $150 - $450 per month

There are 3 trimesters in a year. An international student may take a break in the third trimester if he/she has been registered as a full-time student for two consecutive trimesters and maintained a satisfactory GPA.

Q: Does NPU offer Health Insurance for international students?

A: All international students are required to be covered by a valid health insurance plan while they are studying at NPU. NPU works with major insurance companies to provide affordable Accident & Sickness Insurance Plan. The current annual cost is about $900. The price may be adjusted every year. The insurance is mandatory for all international students who are not covered by any medical insurance plan.

I already have an insurance covering my overseas medical expense; do I still need to purchase NPU's health insurance when I register?

No, but you need to bring us the copy of your insurance policy at the time of registration.  Also please bear in mind that it is your responsibility to make sure your insurance is valid during your study at NPU. You must know that medical costs in the U.S. are unbelievably high. Many Americans file bankruptcy due to illness.

Q: Is there any on-campus working opportunity?

A: There is hardly any on-campus job for the new students. The TA positions (teaching assistants) would be offered to those students who demonstrate excellence both in academic performance and inter-personal skills. They also need to be approved by the teaching faculty members. So usually a student needs to study at NPU for at least one trimester to be qualified for applying for the TA and other on-campus working opportunities.

Q: Do you have any New Student Orientation program?

A: Yes. NPU provides the New Student Orientation (NSO) program to all new students before the beginning of each semester.  The purpose of the NSO is to introduce the services and facilities of the school so the students can better utilize the learning and social resources NPU provides to optimize their learning benefits.  On the NSO day, orientation packages are distributed to the new students; all administrative staff members and representatives from the faculty and the student body would be present to welcome the new students.

Q: Do you offer scholarship?

A: Currently NPU does not offer any scholarship programs.

Q: How many internship courses an international student can take?

A: Internship courses count for elective credit for the undergraduate students, not for the graduate students. A graduate student does not earn graduate credit by taking internship courses. Internship offers the students an opportunity to gain real world experience.

A student may take one Internship course in a semester.

An undergraduate student may earn a maximum of 6 units by taking a series of three Internship courses and meeting the course requirements. There is no such limitation for the graduate students.

Q: My GPA is not so good. Can I still apply?

A: We would look beyond GPA and would evaluate an applicant based on his/her ability to benefit from our programs. For a student with lower GPA, the learning opportunities are still there for him/her; the student will be accepted conditionally and if he/she can maintain a satisfactory GPA (for graduate students: 3.0) for the first two semesters at NPU, the student's probational status will be changed into regular status.

Q: What can I do to speed up my admission process?

A: Do it right at the first time. Provide complete and correct documents to support your application. Make sure the following information is consistent on all your documents: name, and date of birth.

Check the spelling of names; always write the name in capital letters to avoid the misinterpretation. Be sure to put the correct last name and first name when you fill up application form. Last name is your family name; first name is your given name. If you do not have last name or first name, please use N/A to fill up the space. Make sure your name is EXACTLY the same as shown on your passport.

Check the date of birth. U.S universities follow the MM/DD/YYYY format.

Discrepancy on critical data such as name and DOB may halt the evaluation. Please also double check your mailing address, email address and phone number are correct.  Incorrect contact information will result in mail lost and failure to contact you.

Once you are released to NPU, we will issue the new I-20 to you and complete the transfer process.

Please be noted that your new I-20 can be issued only after your SEVIS record is transferred to NPU by your current school. It takes approximately one to two business days to issue you the new I-20 after your school transfers you out.
