Accounts

All NPU students are entitled to the following computer accounts, which provide access to a variety of services:

Windows Accounts

The username of your Windows Account usually will be your Last Name and your First Name Initial. For example, if your name is Kevin Bishop, your username will be bishopk.

When your Windows account is created, a predefined disk quota is set to ensure every student can share the server while protecting the system by preventing a user from taking up all available disk spaces.

1. Login
  • Enter your username
  • Enter your password
  • Domain: select NPU_NETLAB

2. Change Password

A user can change his or her password after a successful login.
Press on "Ctrl"+"Alt"+"Delect" key to invoke the "Change Password" dialog box.

Unix Accounts

Your Unix Account is a separate account from your Windows Account. Usually, the username of your Unix Account is as same as your Windows Account's.

1. Login
a) Through telnet (On NPU Campus)

This option is used on campus only. Pick a host machine you would like to connect to, and type "telnet hostname" at the "Run" program from the Windows "Start" menu. A window will pop out and ask you to type username and password.

b) Through Xmanager (On NPU Campus)

To provide a GUI (Graphical User Interface) to UNIX applications as any other Windows applications running in PC. We now provide Xmanager as a high performance X11R6 X server.

Xmanager 1.3.9 are installed on each PC on campus. To run it:

  1. Login to PC,
  2. Simply click shortcut of Xmanager on desktop,
  3. Select a desired UNIX server which you would like to connect to,
  4. Enter your UNIX username and password.

Then you will be able to use Solaris 8 UNIX environment on PC.

c) Through SSH (Outside of the NPU Campus)

This option is used outside of campus because it's more secure to connect server through SSH.

· Why SSH?

SSH ("secure shell") provides a way to transfer information securely from one computer to another. For example, if you use SSH to login to NPU servers from outside of campus, your password would be encrypted before being sent over the network. Therefore it would be of no use to someone intercepting ("sniffing") network traffic. Your SSH client encrypts information, which is then sent over the network to another computer where an SSH server decrypts the information it receives.

· Download SSH Client Tool

SSH client tools are available at Downloads

· Run SSH

· More about SSH?

Technical information on SSH is available at http://www.ssh.com/faq/
Technical information on OpenSSH, the freeware version for UNIX can be found at http://www.openssh.org/

2. Change Password

After login to the UNIX server, you can change your password by using the "passwd" command.

  1. Enter command "passwd"
  2. Enter current password
  3. Enter new password
  4. Confirm new password

3. Fail to login?

  • Make sure to input the correct username and password, it's case sensitive in UNIX.
  • Submit an Online Support Form.
  • Fill in and submit a Service Request Form at Room 201.

4. Disk Quota

If you are over your disk quota, you will not be able to write and save data into your home directory. You will experience an error message like "xxxx, Disc quota exceeded".

NPUOSC Account

To access the NPU Online Service Center (NPUOSC), you need to go to the NPUOSC Web and login by using an NPUOSC account which is separated from your Windows and Unix Accounts.

If you forgot your NPUOSC Account's password, you can reset your password by clicking "Forgot your password" link at the login page of the NPUOSC web. The new password will be sent to your email address which you provided to us earlier.
