Abstract

Rodric "Rod" Fan is the founder, former Director, former CEO and former CTO of @Road, Inc., a business service company specializing in Mobile Resource Management. @Road remained as a publicly traded company with NASDAQ until it was acquired in March of 2007 by Trimble Communication (TRMB). Mr. Fan resigned from all his positions in @Road in 2002. He is no longer affiliated with @Road. This seminar will be about how his interest, education, and work experience influenced the idea and the process of starting the company from ground zero, and built it to a public company driving the mainstream of the specific industry.

Biography

Rodric "Rod" Fan is the founder, former Director, former CEO and former CTO of @Road, Inc., a business service company specializing in Mobile Resource Management. @Road remained as a publicly traded company with NASDAQ until it was acquired in March of 2007 by Trimble Communication (TRMB). Mr. Fan resigned from all his positions in @Road in 2002. He is no longer affiliated with @Road.

Prior to @Road, Mr. Fan served as the technical director in Space Systems Loral where he led a technical and business unit to design and maintain the satellite control electronics for major satellite programs such as Intelsat and Globalstar. He coordinated the multi-billion dollar engineering project between several European partner companies.

Prior to Space System Loral, Mr. Fan served as project director to propose and design the detail engineering and hardware for the onboard equipment for GPS satellites. Mr. Fan was also the key engineer to provide the system engineering designs for the multiple Satellite orbit-control stations.

Mr. Fan is the inventor of more than a dozen issued US patents and many pending patents. He has done graduate research work in Columbia University with a BSEE degree from Brigham Young University and a MSEE degree from Northwestern Polytechnic University.

Biography

Rafael Orozco is originally from Mexico and holds a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science from Northwester Polytechnic University. While pursuing his Bachelor's Degree, Rafael worked at NPU's Computer Lab as System & Network Administrator and provided technical advice and assistance to both graduate and undergraduate students in the areas of Programming in C/C++, Java, Visual Basic, Data Structures and Computer Networks. He was also President of the NPU Student Association from 1997 to 1998.

Rafael currently works for Adteractive, Inc. as an Engineering Manager. Prior to working for Adteractive, he worked for Credisystem Mexico (2003 - 2004), MetaTV (2000-2002) and Viador, Inc (1998 - 2000).

Abstract

This study explores the determinants of disintermediation on the part of manufacturers given their virtual presence. In particular, the study examines factors influencing a manufacturer’s use of the direct channel vis-à-vis the indirect intermediary channel, given its virtual presence on the Internet. Disintermediation is defined as the action taken by a manufacturer to decrease its dependence on intermediaries by using more of its direct distribution channel to market products to household and business customers (Chircu & Kauffman, 2000; Rosenbloom, 1999). The establishment of the company Web site on the Internet is defined as the manufacturer’s virtual presence (MVP). The proposed conceptual model was tested empirically with manufacturers in the United States. Key informants were high-level executives responsible for making distribution channel decisions. This research is probably the first of its kind to empirically test the factors influencing the extent of disintermediation in the Internet context.

Biography

Dr. Chiayin Chung obtained her degree of Doctor of Business Administration in Marketing from Golden Gate University in 2005. Her areas of specialization include product and brand management, multi-channel marketing, Internet marketing, business-to-business marketing, and international marketing.

She previously taught Marketing Management at Patten University. Prior to teaching, she was a Marketing Consultant at Fashionow (www.music.com.tw) headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, where she advised the company on their product, pricing, strategic partnership, and online music distribution strategies. She also worked as a Research Assistant at Golden Gate University where she assisted the research in the area of business technology purchasing behavior.

Dr. Chung received an M.B.A. in Marketing from The George Washington University and a B.A. in International Trade from Soochow University in Taipei, Taiwan.

She is also a Feng Shui consultant with more than 10 years of experience. Her focus is to incorporate Feng Shui theories into marketing subjects that include brand identity, retail store design, and trade show design.

She currently lives in Fremont with her husband and a 19-month-old son.

Abstract

SAS is a fourth-generation Language. It provides very efficient ways for data manipulation. The SAS Systems is now serving business, government, and educational institutions at thousands of locations worldwide. SAS can run on many computer systems from desktops up to the most powerful mainframes. Many data analysts perceive SAS as "one system to meet all their computing needs" - traditional database management features such as indexing, data compression, support for SOL, and the creation of data views. There are many statistical build-in functions that can be very useful in the research arena as well.

The objective for the one-hour professional seminar at NPU is to provide some fundamental exposure to SAS including “DATA step” as a full featured, high-level programming language; and “PROC step” as subprograms that may be invoked within the main SAS programs. An enterprise’s decision to adopt commercial packaged applications, such as ERP, to replace the legacy applications, will require the translation or reformatting of the enterprise’s legacy data into a format that can be accommodated by the new technology. To accomplish this, SAS is considered a very efficient tool from the presenter’s view, deriving from many years of hands-on experiences.

Biography

Michael Cheng graduated from Soochow University, Taipei, Taiwan with BA degree in Foreign Languages and Literature. He received his MS degree in Computer Science from State University of New York at Binghamton, completed ABD in Computer Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Information Systems from Columbus University, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Upon receiving his Instructor Credential issued by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges, he taught computer science classes at Chabot College, Hayward, CA for five years, and the same at Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill, CA for about two years. He has many years of experience working for corporate America as an SAS consultant, providing IT services in various applications such as statistical analysis, decision support, prototype study, and data transformation downsizing, etc.

Abstract

This seminar will provide an overview of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), its main applications, market dynamics, and future development trend. We will also touch on the architecture of the modern GPU and some research areas where the GPU could potentially provide huge benefits in non-graphic applications.

Biography

Iming Pai has been the Vice President of Software Engineering for S3 Graphics since August of 2000. Prior to S3 Graphics, Mr. Pai served in various engineering positions in the field of Multimedia and Graphics software development, such as Vice President of Software Engineering at Trident Microsystems (1997-2000), Software Director at Sonic Blue (1992-1997), Senior Software engineer at Chips and Technologies (1987-1992), and Senior Software Engineer at Intel (1984 – 1987).

Mr. Pai holds an MS degree in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology and a BS degree in Computer Engineering from National Chio-Tung University in Taiwan.
