Topic: Caring for your Company: Strategic Benefits of a Thoughtful Corporate Culture
Speaker: Dr. David Paul
Date/Time: Saturday, 12/03/2011, 1:00 - 2:00 PM
Location: NPU Administrative Building, Conference Room C, 47671 Westinghouse Dr., Fremont, CA 94539
Abstract:
Why we wrote this book.
We’ve been asked to write this book by countless executives, managers, human resource professionals, students, and academics alike. Our emphasis on the feeling of being cared for at work touches peoples’ lives, their productivity, their ethical stance, and their health. We found out that work engagement, as a stable, person-centered characteristic, has been linked to productivity, innovation, worker health, and to vigor, dedication, and absorption by the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES, Bakker & Leiter,2010). The problem is that managers can’t manage engagement and they don’t know what they can do to improve it. As a result, instead of getting to know their employees’ lives, they resort to measuring their employees’ output.
Up until now, there has been no consistent, systematic body of work which documents or measures the antecedents to worker engagement. This book, a prescription for sustainable competitive advantage, built on the notion that people want to be contributors to the success of their workplace, lays out the results of recent research in a systematic and careful way which will enable you to re-architect your company, give up sleepless nights, and experience new levels of productivity, health, and engagement at work. Whether you are a CEO, a supervisor, an employee, or someplace in between, knowing and applying the techniques and ideas of this book will change your life.
Key Words: Respect, Regard, Reward, Engagement, Belief, Caring
Introduction to the speaker:
•DBA, Northwestern Polytechnic University, Fremont, CA, August 2010
•MBA, Management, California State University, Hayward, CA, March 1998
•MS, Meteorology and Mathematics, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, July 1972
•BS, Chemical Engineering, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, June 1967
In addition to his academic education, Dr. (Col.) Paul is a graduate of the Naval War College, the Air War College, the Air Force Command and Staff College and has taken and taught numerous courses in systems engineering, leadership, and management to public and private institutions such as NASA, San Jose State University, Lockheed Martin, and the Transportation Security Agency.
His academic areas of interest include theoretical and applied management, and organizational behavior and organizational development. His dissertation, titled, “Determining whether the perception of being or feeling cared for at work is related to actual work engagement” points the way to the emphasis that NPU places on the education of the whole individual.
