Abstract
This talk addresses many obstacles in the development of large companies that were previously owned and run by the states and now transitioning to the private sector. Many issues that are faced have roots in the business culture or lack there of. We will look at the special case of China Telecom, the largest wireless company in China and the world.
Biography
Jahan Ghofraniha got his Ph.D. in Signal Processing and Communications from the University of British Columbia in 1997. He has been working in the industry for over 12 years developing communications/wireless/DSP algorithms and implementing them on different hardware platforms.
He has been involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in communications/DSP and wireless systems at NPU since 2002 and also helping the DCE program development as a co-chair. He is currently the Dean of the School of Engineering at NPU. He is also involved in teaching management and professional development courses and workshops at NPU and overseas. He has been managing small and medium-sized engineering teams and projects in the area of communications and signal processing.

Abstract
We've all heard the news about Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, and Martha Stewart to name a few. All of these are good examples of the dire consequences that can occur when ethics are neglected. Ethics are just as important in your workplace as they are in your private life. In fact, many companies are incorporating ethics into their training. Ethics are about making choices. These choices are not always comfortable and may not even benefit you, but they are the right choices. No matter what your job, you will be faced with making difficult ethical decisions. This seminar will show you the steps you can take in ethical deliberation and making a choice that is right.
Biography
Mr. Barry Bishop holds an MPA from Golden Gate University and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Florida State University. He is a member of the American Society for Public Administration as well as Pi Alpha Alpha, a national honor society which recognizes and promotes excellence in the study and practice of public affairs and administration.
Mr. Bishop also teaches a variety of ESL courses at NPU, and has conducted intensive English training workshops here as well as in Korea, Taiwan and China. In addition, he works in the Student Services office at NPU and coordinates various extracurricular activities, such as the Tennis Club and Hiking Club. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, the outdoors, and playing tennis.

Abstract
Dr. Li will introduce the general concept of intellectual property rights and discuss the different aspects of procurement, enforcement and commercialization of U.S. and international patents.
Biography
Zhaoyang Li (Paul) focuses his practice in the area of intellectual property with a particular emphasis on patent law. His patent experience includes overall IP strategy counseling and implementation, patent prosecution, patentability opinions, infringement assessment opinions, due diligence and patent right licensing agreements and patent litigation support. Dr. Li has been appointed by the US State Department to serve as the US Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) speaker in the Greater China region, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, and to promote IPR protection and enforcement in the Greater China region.
Dr. Li has published two books in protection and commercialization of IP rights in Chinese and has been invited to speak on IP protection and commercialization issues at programs sponsored by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, the State IP Office of China, Georgia State University Law Center, Arizona State University School of Business, Tsinghua University, Beijing University Medical School, Nanjing University, Shanghai Municipal Government Intellectual Property Service Center, Shanghai Trademark Association and Science and Technology Council of the Tianjin Municipal Government.

Abstract
Clean and affordable energy resources are two major requirements for future energy policy. Solar Energy is one of the desirable choices. Wafer base, polymer base, and thin film base are the three main technologies associated with solar cell design.
This presentation will go over the differentiation among these three technologies and point out the major benefit of using the thin film solar cell.
Biography
Mr. Michael Muo-Chien Wang is a student in the Doctor of Computer Engineering degree program at NPU. He has been working in the filed of thin film technology in semiconductor manufacture for over 10 years. His experiences include thin film deposition (growth) technologies, interface phenomena between films, and thin film characterization. His employers include ERSO/ITRI, AMPi, and ADT.

Abstract
Bioabsorbable stents have been developed to help unblock and heal diseased arteries and then dissolve without a trace. They are an improvement on permanent metal stents., reducing the risk of side effects, such as secondary blood clots, stent mobility, and interference with such medical diagnostic tools as MRI’s and CT scans. Once a lifetime necessity, blood thinning drugs can be discontinued after only a few months.
Biography
Ms. Claudia Chen received her BA and MBA degree in Tourism in Taiwan. She traveled abroad extensively and used this experience while working in the travel industry, learning the business first hand. She has worked at sales and marketing in the hospitality and tourism industry for many years. She served as Travel Marketing Manager & Deputy Director for overseas study tours at CCU in Taiwan. She has worked as a lecturer for eight years in the Tourism Dept of a higher education institute in Taiwan. To advance her career, as well as increase her knowledge in a wide range of business subjects, she joined NPU to study in the DBA program in 2005.
