About the Speaker

Because of his love for training, Jim decided to try teaching, and became an instructor at UC Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley Extension programs. He then became the UC Berkeley Extension Director for the Business, Technology, and Engineering portfolio, because he wanted to help students gain practical experience and real-world skills. As the Director, he explored opportunities to collaborate with NPU. Knowing that NPU's values closely aligned with his, Jim started teaching at NPU in 2013. His corporate and teaching experience, along with his undergraduate and graduate education, make him an outstanding leader and academic Dean of the School of Business and Co-Chair of NPU's General Studies.

Dr. James Nysather has 30 years of experience in business, startups, and academics, with a special interest in marketing and entrepreneurship. He holds a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Northwestern Polytechnic University and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management. Courses he likes to teach include business analytics, management, and organizational behavior.

Cryptocurrency, NFT, DeFi, and Blockchain

This presentation explores the fundamentals and applications of blockchain technology, private and public blockchain networks similar to Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as concepts of smart contracts, NFT (Non Fungible Token) , and DeFi (Decentralized Finance) . No prerequisites or coding experience required.

About the Speaker

Prof. Ahmed Banafa has extensive experience in research, operations, and management, with a focus on IoT, Blockchain, Cybersecurity, and AI. He is the recipient of the Certificate of Honor from the City and County of San Francisco, Author & Artist Award 2019 of San Jose State University. He was named as No.1 tech voice to follow, technology fortune teller, and influencer by LinkedIn in 2018 by LinkedIn, his research featured on Forbes, IEEE, and MIT Technology Review, and Interviewed by ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, BBC, NPR, and Fox. He is a member of the MIT Technology Review Global Panel. He is the author of the books: "Secure and Smart Internet of Things (IoT) using Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI)", and "Blockchain Technology and Applications".

How to Study CS and Be Successful in the Industry

This forum is hosted by Professors Henry Chang and Ken Cheung. They have guided numerous people to be successful in learning computer science and go on to become engineers at large tech companies in Silicon Valley. They will share their experiences and answer questions about how to be successful in studying at NPU and working in the industry. Students and parents are welcome to participate in the forum.

About the Speaker

Dr. Henry Chang has extensive knowledge in various fields with degrees in DCE, MSCS, MBA, and BSEE. He has a unique combination of education and business savvy, including 30 years of administrative, academic leadership, and teaching experience at Northwestern Polytechnic University (NPU). He also had close to 40 years of computer industry experience involving business activities in the US, China, Taiwan, and Korea.

At NPU he held the positions of Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Chair of Computer Engineering Program, and DCE Program Administrator. He is also a professor teaching courses in the CS, CSE, and EE programs, as well as the key designer of CS, CSE, and DCE curricula. He also had experience as technical leads in large companies, including 18 years at HP and as CTOs of small startup companies. He is also the founder of Silicon Valley Movie & Literature Club.

The Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) is an integration technology. It involves cloud computing, machine learning, security, mobile computing, and embedded systems. In this course, the students use a client device to conduct object detection to collect data and send the data to Google's IoT cloud platform. The knowledge learned will help the students pass the Google IoT Certificate test.

Deep Learning in TensorFlow

Deep learning is one of the important topics in AI development. The networks with more hidden layers are built to implement deep learning algorithms for image insight/analysis, audio AI systems, and sequence-to-sequence modeling of text. Students will learn Python programming based on fundamentals and contemporary usage of the Tensorflow library for the different types of deep architectures.

About the Speaker

Alex Yang received his MSEE/MBA degrees at NPU and is currently teaching courses in electronic/electrical hardware design & embedded system design. A strong advocate of hands-on and object-oriented teaching methodologies, he is involved in a variety of curriculum upgrades and program reviews in computer science and electrical engineering areas and used to hold the position of Engineering School Laboratory Manager at NPU. His professional interests include Digital/Analog IC design, Logic Design & Functional Verification in Verilog/System Verilog, Embedded System Design, Hardware System Level Design (PCB Design), and Artificial Intelligent/Machine Learning.

In addition, he serves in student resume editing and job interview advising from the perspective of the current Hi-Tech industry's job market needs. In addition, he is making efforts to help students build up working experience on the campus through creative and innovative project topics. By maintaining high standards for students he works with, they are motivated to work as a working professional in engineering and scientific thinking.

About the Speaker

Dr. Iwagoshi currently serves as the dean of the School of Engineering at NPU. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the Ohio State University and has garnered more than 30 years of experience in conducting research, working in the high-tech industry, and teaching courses in Computer Science. At HP, he led software engineering teams to design and implement various commercial software projects & applications. As an instructor, he taught and mentored numerous CS students in computer programming, algorithms, software engineering, and the development of their Capstone projects. After becoming the dean in 2017, Dr. Iwagoshi was instrumental in working with the faculty to introduce new courses and update the CS & EE programs' curricula to align with current technological advances and industry demands, as well as helping NPU to achieve the institutional goal of acquiring a regional accreditation from the WSCUC.

Dr. Mariam Ghazvini holds an Ed.D. degree from USC, a Master’s degree in Counseling from Santa Clara University, and a Master’s degree in Education from San Jose State University. She is a Professional Mentor, Coach, and Distinguished Toastmaster. Introduction to Data Science

Data science is the hottest field of the century. In this introductory lecture, we will learn about basic concepts in data science, such as data collection, data cleaning, data preparation, data analysis, and basic machine learning models. Some examples will also be discussed.

About the Speaker

Dr. Bhaskar’s broad research and teaching interests include Wireless Communications & Networks, Signal processing, Error control coding, and Queuing theory. Dr. Bhaskar has won several national awards for outstanding academic and research contributions in coding theory applications for contemporary 4G wireless systems. Dr. Bhaskar is a Senior Member of the IEEE (SM-IEEE) since March 2013 and is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (F-IETE), and Life Fellow of the Institute of Engineers (F-IE) in India. Dr. Bhaskar is also a professor at San Francisco State University in the College of Engineering.

Jennie O'Connor, MA English, MEd TESOL, is NPU's ESL Administrator. Jennie leads and develops Northwestern Polytechnic University’s Intensive English Program. Her supportive manner encourages students in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English. She specializes in English for Academic Purposes as well as TOEFL and Cambridge exam preparation. Jennie’s 16 years of related experience include serving as the Director of English Studies at ISL Sprachschule in Germany, where she taught Business English; teaching high school English as a Second Language and English at Andrews Osborne Academy in Ohio; and teaching English as a Second Language and English at Cuyahoga Community College and Lakeland Community College in Ohio.
